I have issues with this as well. I perform a 25-point auto bed level before every print (I do have the latest firmware), and when I print something small it usually goes unnoticed. I recently tried to print a similar bed leveling object, and about 80% of my print was burned and smeared into the bed despite conducting the level procedure directly before heating it.
In addition, it seems no matter what I do, my babystep Z is always different. Sometimes I can print at 0, sometimes I need to move it slightly, and other times I'm sitting at as much as -0.9 or +0.9, depending on the print, day, how i hold my tongue, etc. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to it. I also notice that my first layer is ALWAYS either too deep into the board or too far away, with subsequent layers generally being perfect (if I don't fumble with the babystep). It's all quite frustrating, as the print settings never actually change (just the Z step).
