What Should My First Layer Look Like?

-Refer to our new quickstart guide for more information

-Getting the proper first layer is very important for your print. This layer determines how well the rest of the model sticks to the bed and can be the difference between a model that breaks off mid print, or one that is nearly impossible to remove.

-The first layer should be a clean consistent line that is semi-squeezed between the hotend and the bed surface. Don’t be afraid to look very close and view the first layer (right at the tip of the nozzle).

-You can manually turn both z-axis couplers (the aluminum cylinders connecting the threaded rod to the motors) to raise or lower the extruder. Looking from the top, clockwise raises the extruders and counter-clockwise lowers it. You can also turn just one side to raise or lower just one side as you level the extruder.

-Some large prints with a very small point of contact with the bed may require additional support (on the first layer) which can either be built into the model or generated in your slicing engine. This layer is often called a “raft” which is built up of diagonal lines extending beyond the edge of the printed object providing more surface area.

Considering that some printers, like Afina, have build platforms that are composed of holes, called perfboard, grooves in the acrylic bed shouldn't be a problem.

It just might impact how smooth the bottom of the print is.
